Upcoming custody/visitation CLEs

I will be speaking at two upcoming CLEs (and moderating one) being produced by the South Carolina Bar. Both are devoted to child custody and visitation. Attendance is always appreciated, especially for the one I will be moderating.

On January 31, 2020, I will be one of the speakers at the Bar’s annual guardian ad litem training, In the Best Interest of the Child: 2020 Annual Guardian ad Litem Training and Update. This year it is moderated by Julianne Stokes. My presentation will cover child custody case law updates for 2019 (and 2020 if the appellate courts publish a custody opinion before then) and what I learned in the Bojilov case. As Ms. Stokes was my initial opposing counsel in that case, she will also add her insights into what was one of the more interesting cases of our career.

On February 7, 2020, I will be moderating a CLE addressing third party custody and visitation, which our Bar has titled in homage to Pasty Cline, Back in Baby’s Arms: How third parties can get or keep visitation or custody of children. No South Carolina CLE has yet focused on this topic. While I will be speaking on De Facto Custodian, I am more interested in the other presentations–as they will be covering topics not yet addressed by our appellate courts. Larry Dale Dove and Dr. Cheryl Fortner-Wood will start the day discussing current attachment theory, which undergirds the rationale for third party custody and visitation. The CLE ends with a panel discussion/Q&A, so the more folks who attend and present ideas and questions the livelier that discussion will be.

Hope to see my colleagues there.

I have both of these on my calendar already. I love that Big Ticket.
